Pinstripe Butterflyfish - Natural History & Ceramics Painting Masterclass - March 29

$260.00
Out of stock

Please join us for an intimate and hands-on natural history and ceramics painting class where you will learn how to paint a Pinstripe Butterflyfish (Chaetodon lunulatus) with underglazes (ie the “paints” applied under the glaze).

This masterclass is part of our series where a marine biologist/ecologist will be in attendance and in March we will be welcoming Bella Marrable to our Coconut Crab studio.

Bella’s research as a marine ecologist sends her to One Tree Island Research Station (OTIRS) on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), where she is lucky to spend long stretches of time showering under buckets and wrangling fish. By determining the heightened vulnerability of fish species that are acutely specialised to a coral dominated ecosystem, she hopes to assess the effect of disturbance and coral loss upon butterflyfishes (Chaetodontidae) as markers for change. More information about Bella and the team’s broader work on OTIRS was reported on ABC news.

The Pinstripe Butterflyfish, Chaetodon lunulatus, is a conspicuous beauty abundant across the GBR. Often found in bonded pairs, it glides seemingly without effort above the arborescent coral matrix. This species is made unique by its exclusive diet of coral, and it picks almost constantly at their stony, stinging surface. Though, this dependency upon coral makes it particularly vulnerable to change. As coral reefs are lost at an accelerating rate, Chaetodon lunulatus is just one of the iconic species whose future is marked by uncertainty.

Participants will be given one of Casa Adams signature medium platters bisqued, with the butterflyfish already monoprinted and ready to be painted. During the class, Araceli will share all the tricks and techniques she has mastered over the 13 years + she has been making and painting ceramics. All materials, as well as a delicious morning tea, are included. The platters will be glazed and fired in the studio and ready for collection approximately one week after. No previous experience needed!

Timings: 9am to 12pm

Location: The class will take place at our award-winning studio the Coconut Crab in Dulwich Hill, Sydney. The address will be given to confirmed participants closer to the date

***If you’d like to paint the fish on a dinner plate instead, there is an additional charge of $25. Just add this class to your cart and then add Dinner plate option for painting class to your cart as well.***
